About the School

The Brattleboro School of Dance was founded in 1976 by Kathleen Keller who recognized the need in the community for a dance center that would provide a wide variety or classes for both adults and children.

Consistent with her philosophy, Ms. Keller and the school's staff have worked to create a friendly, supportive atmosphere where anyone who wishes to dance is encouraged to do so. The school strongly believes that dance can be a vital aspect in the lives of both men and women, whether they wish to enjoy its benefits as an avocation or to pursue a career in dance. The school also believes that students learn most effectively when presented with maximum challenge and support and when the artistry and fun of dance is not forgotten.

Opportunities to participate in activities outside the school are varied. Demonstrations and classes are conducted by Ms. Keller and the more advanced students at local schools and festivals. Sales at local fairs and arts events provide fun for students as well as money for the scholarship fund. Encouragement and assistance are provided for all who wish to audition for admittance to schools which provide more intensive training. Best loved and attended however, are the school's performances, which have included ballets such as Cinderella, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Sleeping Beauty, and Pulcinella; and concerts such as Pieces for Peace I & II, Shall We Dance, Wolf Tales, Movers and Shakers, Tapestry, Carmina Burana, Wilderness Rules, Collaboration, Coreatudes, Encore Encore, Footwork & Fantasy, Bits & Pieces, Tribute: A Generation of Dance, World of Differences, Journeys, Dancing Between the Lines, Moving, and Places.

The Brattleboro School of Dance is recognized not only for its excellence, but also for the combination of learning experiences, group interaction, and community involvement that has earned it respect and admiration for the last 29 years.

For the last eight years BSD has collaborated with the Albany Berkshire Ballet. The children's roles in their local performance of the Nutcracker have been danced by BSD students.

Windham Regional Career Center and BSD have worked together to create and run the WRCC Performing Arts/Dance program. This intensive dance program is offered to students from BUHS, Twin Valley, Leland and Gray Union High School, Bellows Falls High School, Austine School for the Deaf, and Hinsdale High School.
